A Rare and Large and Colorful Fine Gold-Gilt Wire Japanese Meiji Lidded incense Burner with Two Panels

$799.99

Extremely rare fine gold-gilt wire and silver wire Meiji cloisonné covered incense burner that is in round form. The incense burner has a matching lid or cover that is enameled and is fenestrated to allow incense smoke to escape the vessel. The jar has an interior, small removable vessel to contain the burning incense. The jar has two attached wing-shaped handles which are enameled. The jar rests of three enameled legs.

The design around the middle is of two large panels. The front panels shows a large, coiled green dragon with bright red flames and yellow eyes against a reddish-orange aventurine background with embedded goldstone. The reverse large panel is of a large phoenix bird that nearly fills the whole panel. The bird has orange and lavender plumes and feathers and is set against a translucent dark green background with embedded smaller goldstones. one the sides the panels are connected with two large red-orange bands containing swirling paulonia plants. The all-over background design throughout is a millefleur motif of stylized chrysanthemum heads. Around the bottom, below the reddish bands and the panels is a band of intermingled swatches of Japanese fabric patterns and fan-shaped cartouches with bright back grounds and having floral designs.

The jar is 6 1/“ tall by 7” wide at the handles. Excellent condition with a couple of small nicks on the left hand upper corner of the green phoenix panel (see close-up). One of the handles is slightly lose. There are mounting screws with nuts on the inside of the jar but we have not attempted to tighten them. Ask all questions before bidding.
