Large Gold or Gold -Gilt Wire Meiji 2-Panel Lidded Jar (SOLD)

This is a beautiful large two-panel jar with lid and enameled finial from the early 1890’s. The item includes 3 parts: the jar, a lid and a finial on the lid. The vase is in round form with classic broad shoulders and rounded tapering body down to a narrow foot. The jar is 10”tall from finial to base and 7” in diameters at the widest point, and 4” wide diameter at the base. The jar is heavy and may be made from bronze.

The design consists of two large cartouches on the front and the rear which are framed with a dark brown bamboo motif border. The cartouches are as if panels of fabric hanging from the shoulder border around the neck which also has the brown colored bamboo motif. The front panel depicts a bright red bird with yellow breast amid hydrangeas and smaller white flowers growing from a plant with lanceolate shaped leave on a wireless turquoise blue backgrounds. The other panels depicts a snowy egret amid some water plants including reeds and yellow flowering plants, also on a blue background. There are two smaller side panels, also hanging from the top border on the shoulders. These smaller panels show various abstract symbols and also including in one panel a coiled green dragon and on the other a face of fierce beastie. Around the shoulders, closes to the neck is a ring of floral motifs and arabesque vines on a black background. and below that a ring of various Japanese fabric patterns. The border at the base includes a fabric pattern and arabesque scrolling with floral motifs. Fine silver wire is used to depict the two birds while the remainder of the wires are gold-gilt. The lid has a central cartouche of a coiled green dragon flying among stylized clouds on a back background the outer lid has fabric patterns, as does the sides of the lid. The finial is enamel with white flowers on a dark blue background The jar is counter enameled with turquoise blue on the base and interior.
