A fine, elaborate and beautiful Japanese Meiji cloisonne covered jar with finial in rectangular form with rectangular body, mouth and lid and is mounted on four feet decorated with enamel and cloisonne motifs.

The design on the body of this jar has framed panels on each side. The two panels on the long sides have bright orange backgrounds with turquoise fames. One depicts a dragon and the other has a phoenix bird. The panel on the ends have a mottledgold-ochre backgrounds with bright gold borders and depict mythical beasties. The background behind the panel is black with repeating circular floral mons shapes and stylized gold vines. There is a border at the mouth of repeating lapets containing small phoenix birds. The lid has a central curvilinear medallion with a mottled gold-ochre background and various abstracted shapes. The bottom is undecorated gold-washed copper or brass and the interior counter-enamelling is turquoise blue.
