Impressive Large Very Fine Silver Wire Meiji Vase with Double Wall Neck Construction
This is a classic Golden Age masterpiece from the 1890s in round form with broad shoulders, an incurving neck with double wall construction under the lip, The body tapering down to a slightly to a flared out foot.
The design is of three Manchurian red-topped cranes on a highly polished by hand black wireless background. Note the very fine silver wire detailing on the cranes feathers, neck, legs and feet. Beautifully curved sculpted wire is used for the leading edges of the cranes’ wings. There is a complex collar border around the neck with white and lavender flowers and leafy tendrils on a green background. Thick silver wire is used to form some of the tendrils. The lappet border at the base repeats the used of the green color. We have seen a very very similar border used on an Hayashi Tanigoro but no attribution can be made without further evidence. There are several places where fine borders of tiny cloisonné rondel with with black enamel are used.
The vase is 9.5” tall. Unsigned. Excellent condition.
