This is a fine gold-gilt and silver wire wire Japanese Meiji cloisonné covered box that is four sided, rectangular shape with rectangular lid. The jar is made of copper with a mottled enamel base. The interior has engraved panels that are gold-washed.

The design on the lid is of an eye-popping large Peacock with fully opened tail feathers. The Peacock is green with a blue belly and the “eyes” in the tail feathers are bright yellow, red and a dusty rose pink color. The background is a bright orange color. The base has gold-gilt wired curling garlands against a mottle teal-blue background. The sides of the box and lid have alternating designs of white and pink flowers with stylized silver wire clouds in the orange backgrounding. There a a repeating geometric border at the base of alternating pink, teal, and indigo narrow lozenge shaped forms. The interior engraving depicts a design on the lid of two detailed cranes. The interior shows a perched hawk or eagle with a crane clutched firmly in the eagle’s talons

The box is 3 2/3” long by 3 3/4 inches wide and 2 1/3” high. Unsigned. The box is in excellent antique condition although there is a small brown splotch on the finish on the lid and there are tarnish stains on the interior box lower panel. Please email us with any questions.
